50 Ways with Porridge: Making porridge into dessert
If I had my way, most meals would be more like dessert. I have already discovered a plethora of ways to make oatmeal more of a dessert-y thing, cause its so amazing and cheap and healthy (if you don’t make it the way I do), and any way to make something more like dessert is fine by me. So I give you the first installment of 50 Ways with porridge.
Brown sugar and Whiskey porridge with Blueberry chutney.
1/2 cup of rolled oats
1 cup of water
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla
Splash of whiskey or scotch
Chopped apple (optional. But seriously, you should do it)
topping: Blueberry and apple chutney (any chutney will do. I’m thinking mango next time)
Throw your oats and water into a medium saucepan. Bring that stuff to a boil, then turn it down to medium heat. Or lower. Don’t burn it, for christ’s sake. Now throw in your vanilla and brown sugar. Stir it like it’s meant to be stirred…. for about 10 minutes, depending on your type of oats. Throw in your tiny bit of whiskey near the end. Just to up the stakes, and bring out the richness of the brown sugar. Trust me on this.
Serve hot over chopped apple. Put some chutney on there. Also, make a little moat around the porridge with some milk/soy milk/almond milk, or if you’re feeling like getting fat (in a good way) cream! But try to use organic cream. The kind with reasonably happy cows who are not being hooked up to a machine in a factory and milked within an inch of their lives. No need to make someone else’s life a bummer just cause you want to eat delicious porridge, right?
Bon appetite!

Jeff’s Psych Bikes
If you saw the previous post about Halo Halo Village (part 2 to follow shortly), then you might have seen Jeff’s psych bike already. Here are some detailed shots of them. Taking yourself too seriously is like poison, that’s why Jeff’s Psych Bikes are so fucking amazing. I can’t not smile when I picture Jeff riding down the street on his Psych Bikes. It makes my day.

Studio visit: Halo Halo Village, Toronto. Part une.
Jeff Garcia has been amazing for as long as I have known him, and I’m sure for long before that too. Some people just ooze creativity and good vibes, and he’s one of them. He opened up Halo Halo Village on Christie just round the corner from Fiesta Farms a little while ago, and I am sad that it took me so long to get over there, but sooo glad I finally did. Jeff consistently blows my mind with his ingenuity. Going to Halo Halo Village is like walking into the mainframe of Jeff’s insanely active brain. Everything is hand-built, re-purposed and/or donated/found. He opens the studio to the general public whenever he happens to be in there working, and will host workshops, drawing jams, and whatever else he feels like on any give night. On this particular night, we were mostly just listening to Aaliyah and drinking lavender tea. I’m so fascinated with the things people choose to surround themselves with, and the transformative qualities of lighting and smells when it comes to decor. Halo Halo Village is a perfect embodiment of how all this stuff can go so totally right. I’ll post part two of the studio visit, including some shots of Jeff’s Psych Bikes later on. In the meantime, see what Halo Halo is up to here.
